“Less me and more we” is a slogan well known in the business world to promote working together as a team. I think this can apply particularly well during the holiday season.

I was recently discussing childhood Christmas memories with a group of friends. Many of our memories involved getting presents and experiencing the joy of “receiving”. At least, that is the part that sticks out in my memory. At holiday times, it is easy to revert to the childhood version of ourselves, that is to say- to become a bit selfish. I’m not saying we should not take some “down time” and recharge our batteries, holidays are a really great opportunity to do this! But how many Christmas movies can you watch? It is also a time that we can strengthen our involvement in community. This is a time when it is easier to have social functions (watch those Christmas movies with someone else!) and to get involved in serving those less fortunate than ourselves. There are opportunities to work at the Food Bank or in soup kitchens, to donate needed items to those who can really use them. This is not just good for society, it is good for our health!

Research demonstrates that volunteering leads to better health, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service. Volunteer activities can strengthen the social ties that protect individuals from isolation during difficult times, while the experience of helping others leads to a sense of greater self worth and trust. A study by Arnstein et al in 2002 showed that individuals suffering from chronic pain experienced declines in their pain intensity and decreased levels of disability and depression when they began to serve as peer volunteers for others suffering from chronic pain. “More we” is actually good for your health!

This holiday season, look for opportunities for community and service. Shovel a neighbour’s driveway, babysit the kids of a young family so the parents can go out, visit with an elderly friend. Experience the joy of the season with less me and more we!
